This Person Does Not Exist

0 out of 5

This Person Does Not Exist is a random face generator powered by StyleGAN, a neural network developed by Nvidia in 2018. The generator creates realistic and detailed fake portraits of non-existent people in just a few seconds. The main goal of the AI behind this tool was to train it to recognize fake faces and improve the performance of video cards by automatically recognizing faces and applying rendering algorithms to them. However, the publicly available StyleGAN code was used by an engineer at Uber to create this random face generator that quickly gained popularity on the internet.

Using the website is simple and straightforward. Upon visiting the site, a random face is generated, and users have the option to download the generated picture. If the user is not satisfied with the face they see, they can simply refresh the page to generate a new face. The website displays the results of the generator’s work, which are updated every 2-3 seconds.

The AI behind This Person Does Not Exist is so advanced that it is almost impossible to recognize whether an image is of a real person or a fake generated by the AI. In fact, 90% of the fake images created by the AI are not recognized by ordinary people, and even experienced photographers can only recognize about 50% of them. While there are no services available for recognition, humans’ visual processing systems are still stronger than computers’, allowing for potential forgery detection.

To help people become more analytical of potentially false portraits, Jevin West and Carl Bergstrom created a website called “Which Face Is Real.” This website provides guidance on how to recognize fake images by looking for symmetrical issues, uneven teeth, odd characteristics like pixels and repeated incisors, and studying the background for unusual distortions or torn appearances. Another distinguishing feature of the NVIDIA StyleGAN algorithm used by This Person Does Not Exist is the presence of glossy “water splotches” on the generated images.

Overall, This Person Does Not Exist is a powerful AI tool that showcases the capabilities of neural networks in generating realistic fake portraits of non-existent people. Its ease of use and the difficulty in distinguishing between real and fake images make it a fascinating and thought-provoking tool in the field of AI.
